Rat Wrap

Rat Wrap is a single-screen precision platformer, where you can only jump when you're off the ground and are able to wrap about the screen (hence the name). You are THE RAT and you must get THE CHEESE, that's all you need to know!

This game was made in 4 days, sort of as a personal gamejam. After Astral Courthouse + my exams, I had planned to resume work on my main projects next week. But I had 4 days that remained in the week, so I created this to keep me busy.

Inspiration came from me generally thinking about flash games + watching my buddy Velovetre stream some flash games. I find flash games had this like trend of "single-screen precision platformers" that I've really only seen be made in flash. This game is suppose to be like a homage to them. Specifically, Give Up Robot and Inspector Blindson. Especially Inspector Blindson actually! As a kid, that game kind of had a slightly off-putting vibe to me that I tried to replicate here.

This was also my first time in a while doing proper teeny tiny pixel art, to further add to the flash platformer influence. It's been a fun process and I'm happy with how it looks! It's nice I could just do it with a mouse and stuff instead of having to slide on over to my drawing tablet. Tried to add a few extra good ol Lua flourishes to it, in the form of the palette and the use of edited photos.

Sound design was kind of rushed but I don't hate it or anything. I think in general with the art and music, I've painted a very odd surreal vibe which I'm quite happy with.

I wanted to have 30 levels in this thing, plus pacman-inspired intermission cutscenes for every 10 levels... buuutt yeah time constraints got in the way of that. I also wanted any option to have mobile control support but that also got canned due to time. Maybe I could do that in an update tho.
